Chairman’s Report – North Devon Grecians – AGM 6th July 2012

I am pleased to present my report following a further 12 months in the life of the North Devon Grecians.

In October we agreed to support the Social Club with their proposal to purchase five 50 inch televisions. We provided £800 to cover the cost of two televisions.

I had the pleasure attending the North Devon soccer skills event run by the Football in the Community team at ParkSchool to promote the NDGs.

We kicked off the New Year with a pre match social meeting at SJP. Approximately 30 attended including our President Jimmy Giles and City legend Alan Banks. Jimmy and Alan had agreed to speak but as a high profile match was being shown live on the television it was decided not to interrupt the coverage. Thanks to Nick for setting up the event.

At our March meeting we had a presentation from Simon Hayward, Head of the Youth Development Team for ExeterCity. I think this was an eye opener for all those who attended. A very professional set up which as seen the likes for George Friend and Dean Moxey progressing through the City ranks and only in the last few days we have heard of Sean Goss moving to Manchester United for a reported initial fee of £100k. Further success of the Development team was reflected in their tremendous achievement in reaching the Cup Final of the under 18’s.

Our highlight of the year was our Players Evening held at the Park Hotel. Players Billy Jones and Lenny Pidgeley, Before the players entered a Q&A session James Vittles gave an overview of the role the Football in the Community played within the City and outlaying district. The two players spoke of life at the club and answered probing questions from the floor. Our thanks to Laurence for organising and chairing such a successful evening.

Our new Website is now up and running thanks to Mark (the Torquay supporter) and John. It is very user friendly and provides a great deal of information.

Membership for the year was yet again over 200. I am sure all of us our extremely grateful to our Membership Secretary Nick. Such a number can only be achieved by a great deal of hard work and enthusiasms.

Thanks also to our Secretary Alice for producing such full and accurate minutes month on month.

Likewise thanks to our Treasurer Keith for taking on this role and looking after our finances.

Following David stepping down from organising the away travel Nick and Laurence are to be thanked for taking this on. I do consider providing this facility to our members a very important aspect of the NDGs.

I mentioned David Knight and we must record our thanks for his tremendous support he has given the NDGs in various roles over the years nobody could have given more. We fully appreciate his business reason for having to step down and wishing him every success for the future.

Also thanks to Terry for acting as my deputy and to Mick for his behind the scenes work especially on the publicity.

The Challenges remain:

As with so many societies these days outside of the committee it appears difficulty to attract active support from other members to our social events. Somehow we need to come up with some new ideas to that will gain the support of the members.

I also feel the NDGS deserve better recognition and support from the Club.

I am sorry to include such a negative note on what as been a good year but feel frustrated at the lack of support you the committee receive.

Finally on a more positive note the NDGs have been proud to sponsor Joel Randall in the Youth Development Scheme and delighted Mark Walker’s son will be the second to benefit from our sponsorship during the coming season.
